Research Tips

Be sure to evaluate the source of your information. Remember, you can't believe everything you read!

Remember, most everyone has two family names: your father's, but also your mother's. Don't feel you must restrict your research to just your paternal family tree.

Start by asking each of your relatives for their personal information, eg. full name, date of birth, place of birth, date of marriage, place of marriage, religion, trades/skills, etc. All information will become valuable to future researchers.

Next, visit your local library for newspaper clippings that may contain family information. Churches and cemetaries also contain valuable information. The best place to find most of your historical information can be found in your local and State/Province archives. There are also many Historical and other types of Societies that conduct ongoing research.

Document everything, whether significant or not. Down the road tidbits of information can be a goldmine. Good Luck!
